How would you translate it?

T-shirts of the week

  • Jul. 24th, 2008 at 10:18 AM
Favorite t-shirts spotted this week:

Let the Wookie win.

I'm no longer with stupid.

EVERY TIME YOU POST WITH CAP LOCKS ON,
ee cummings kills a kitten.

Also, lots of people have asked about what's happening with the AGATB movie. So here's your answer: not so much yet.

The script is being hammered out. That's where things stand. So, just to clarify: There has been no casting, no production start date, no secret Hollywood cabal meetings (or none that I was invited to and asked to bring snacks). As soon as I hear anything more, I'll post it. Promise.

And now, back to BOVINE. Five more days of deadline. And I've promised myself if I work hard today, I will go see DARK KNIGHT as my reward and I will mix the M&M's into the popcorn.

Sorry....translation request.

Sorry to do this, but I was wondering if someone could help me translate this ad into French? I'm trying to find a French teacher in my area and want to put the ad on vivastreet.

English speaker seeks FLE (french for foreigners) teacher located in/around centreville Metz.

Sly indeed...

Huh. I just heard the first rap song I've ever actually liked. I mean, I don't know that I'd listen to it often enough to actually buy it (rap gets a bit monotonous for me, in addition to generally just not being my style), but I definitely appreciated it. It's called "Sly Fox," by Nas, and it's basically a clever and intelligent rant on Fox News Channel and Bill O'Reilly. Saw it performed on The Colbert Report, of course... (*grin*)

Natsume Yuujinchou

You all need to watch it.

+ The animation style reminds me of Honey & Clover with youkai. (It's a shoujo manga from LaLa)
+ It's from Brains Base - the wonderful people behind Innocent Venus, Kamichu, Baccano, and Kure-nai.
+ Everyone who reads my journal should know one thing - I LIKE THE LADIES. The main character is a boy and while yes, there are ladies, the focus is almost entirely on Natsume. AND I LOVE HIM. He is quite awesome. And he breaks my heart.
+ Reiko is a kickass lady and she breaks my heart too.
+ Watching this show just makes me SMILE SO DAMN HARD - even while breaking my heart. I honestly haven't had a show like that since Manabi Straight.
+ Have I mentioned that it BREAKS MY HEART - in the good way, mind you. I'm a sap and it's those little relationships and little hints that reveal the bigger picture that just make me love a show so damn much.

GOOD TIMES, :D

arrosoir

  • Jul. 23rd, 2008 at 5:14 PM

Arrosoir
In Gigondas (Vaucluse): sidling up to the bar for a cool summer drink.

arrosoir (ah-ro-zwar) noun, masculine
    : watering can

Example sentence: Hear it in French:  Download arrosoir.mp3 .Download arrosoir.wav
Un arrosoir n'est pas un tuyau.
A watering can is not a hose.

Michel Thomas Speak French For Beginners: 10-CD Program

A_day_in_a_french_life
Wheezing, gasping, and sawing were three horrific sounds playing at our neighborhood block party after one of the revelers swallowed a garden hose.

...or so it seemed. Information regarding the accident was sketchy... that is, sketchy to this English speaker who pieced together the French worded details of the drama.

Wheeze! Gasp! Saw!... Wheeze! Gasp! Saw!... the rescue team (three local grape farmers) worked diligently to save the victim from suffocation.

"What happened?" I asked, lost (linguistically) amid the commotion.
"He was playing with the arrosoir...." my next-door neighbor explained.
"Arrosoir?"

On hearing the French word "arrosoir," my mind presented a picture of a garden hose. Just then, I heard the victim (a child?) gasp again.... When the rescuers asked us to stand back, my knees grew weak and I felt the need to hang on to something. So I threw my arm around my neighbor.
"It'll be okay..." I explained.
"Yes," she assured me, he would.
"He?"

As I could not bear to watch the resuscitation, my mind's eye proceeded to paint the unfortunate scene -- based on an iffy translation of a few key words: I saw the victim. I saw the "arrosoir". In my French-processing Anglophone brain, one plus one equalled "victim choking on garden hose". Unfathomable was how that chilling, sawing sound figured into the equation. Why on earth were the rescuers using a sharp-toothed scie* to free the victim's blocked respiratory? Near faint at the thought, a certain slew of words had the effect of smelling salts and I perked right up.

"That dog is always getting into mischief!" one of the women remarked.

Mischief? Dog? Turning now to the drama, I saw three men encircling the furry victim. I noticed the animal's tail wagging slowly, like the pendulum of a clock. How much longer could it survive without air? And where was that "hose" it had supposedly swallowed? With the men kneeling in a circle around the animal, all I could see was the dog's hopeful tail....

Suddenly, the sawing sound stopped...

Next, the huddle of men opened up. And, slowly, like the first few drops of rain hitting the roof of a tin shed only to gain momentum ... the hush of silence was replaced by storm of laughter. There in the spotlight stood the mutt, tail wagging vigorously now....

And what a sight! From the looks of things it was clear that it was not the dog that had swallowed the arrosoir, but the arrosoir had swallowed the dog!

Watering can The mischievous mutt had stuck its nose inside the slim-necked watering can (arrosoir!) and, once all the way in, couldn't pull its head out! Now that the rescuers had safely removed the base of the watering can (all that sawing), the dog could breathe freely, never mind the unusual "collar" around its neck, which
resembled one of those cones that veterinarians attach to prevent a dog from scratching its wounds. This "cone", being French, was rather avant-garde -- what with a handle on one side and an upside down spout on the other.

Newly adorned myself (wearing the latest French word on my tongue), I stood there, much like the dog, having broken through another baffling (language) barrier. Only, this time, the laughter was directed at the other guy.

I want to translate Kate Ryan's desenchantée...

nager dans les eaux troubles
des lendemains
attendre
ici la fin attender = to wait for? (so "to wait for my mother" = "attendre ma mère"?)
flotter dans l'air trop lourd
du presque rien
à qui tendre la main

si je dois tomber de haut
que ma chute soit lente
je n'ai trouvé de repos
que dans l'indifférence
pourtant, je voudrais
retrouver l'innocence
mais rien n'a de
sens, et rien ne va

tout est chaos
à côté
tous mes idéaux: des mots
abîmés...
je cherche une âme, qui
pourra m'aider
je suis
d'une génération désenchantée, what does the "de" mean - d'une génération?
désenchantée

I would hugely appreciate it if someone could translate all the marked parts and answer the questions. ...oh yeah, if there are any spelling/grammar mistakes in the lyrics please let me know =)
Thanks in advance =)

Can you lend me that knife of yours?

So I was supposed to go online last night in Hendersonville, but I had to go buy a new camera cause mine got ruined when Ellen put an open water bottle in my purse and everything got soaked, so. I am now in Stephen's City, Virginia in a Holiday Inn with blessed, blessed internet.

I'd only been to Fayetteville in NC before, so I was amazed at how beautiful the mountains are here. I've never really been a fan of them, seeing as I'm a Florida girl, but holy god were the two mountain ranges gorgeous. And the sunsets! The colors of the sky with the clouds over the peaks- it was breathtaking. So I took lots of pictures.

We also went to this cool place called the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, which is this beautiful castle constructed by one of the Vanderbilts. I got some faaaabulous pictures of the mountains and the outside of the house and the grounds.

Mrs Hoppe also taught me how to crochet! And I'm pretty good at it so far. I'm not doing anything too difficult or anything, but for me to learn anything that requires more dexterity than typing is a challenge, so I'm proud.

We have about seven more hours and 421 miles of driving until we reach NY, and after today's stress (I am an awesome navigator, but the Blue Ridge Parkway effed us over big time with their detours) I cannot wait to just arrive and have no where further to go than Saratoga.

Regrets?

  • Jul. 22nd, 2008 at 4:17 PM
So, my uncle married a woman from Belgium (a French-speaking woman obviously) who is my aunt. In 2005 I had the opportunity to go over to Belgium with them and my cousins for two weeks and meet the family and just generally see Belgium. I love her family, they are some of the nicest, kindest and funniest people I've ever met.

Unfortunately, as of last week, my aunt's niece Alexandra died from cancer. I feel really bad about it, they're such a great group of people and I want to send an e-mail or something to let them know that I'm sorry for their loss.

Except, in all the French I've taken I've never really learned how you express regrets for such events or any kind of phrases that could be used, at all. In fact, I'm not even really sure where to start.

I'd really appreciate it if any of you could help me formulate something, a short paragraph or just a couple of sentences, that would really help me express my regrets and to let them know I'm thinking of them. Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.

Merci beaucoup tout le monde.

If you give a Frame a Photoshop...

And I just realized I've spent the last two hours (hours that ought to have been spent on sleeping, or at least getting useful things done) making icons. (*sigh*) Ah well -- I had fun. And I think I'm getting better at it too. I'm starting to figure out ways of tweaking the images so that the text is actually legible after LJ sends it through the grinder (*grin*). Here are some of my brand-new creations (all featuring Inuyasha -- it started with one particular idea, and then I kept thinking of others...):
